Lyrics: Lookin’ Up My Back Door; Artist: Ms Butt Meddler
Just got home from pharmacy, guzzled my GoLytely
Got to sit down, take a rest on the commode
Colon prep it kicks in, pretty soon I’m poopin’
Doo, doo, doo, poopin’ out my back door
Now that I’m turnin’ 50, I need colonoscopy
To look for all the scary polyps rompin’ up my rear
If you don’t want the cancer, scopin’ is the answer
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ up my back door
Gastroenterologists want to frolic in my bowels
Sayin’ “Take a ride on my flyin’ scope”-
Wond’rous apparitions from narcotic medications
Doo, doo, doo, scopin’ up my back door
The nurses and the doctor pump air between my cheeks
I’m takin’ a ride on their flyin’ scope!
The drugs pack quite a wallop, but soon I’ll have no polyps
Doo, doo, doo, scopin’ up my back door
(up 1 key)
Fraid of fartin’? Make a noise! Release that back door, oh joy
Listen to that happy flatus echo round the room.
{Slowly}
Repeat the fun in five years, meantimes you’ll have no fears
Doo, doo, doo, scopin’ up my back door

Press Release 2011 “Lookin’ Up My Backdoor”
What do Milton Berle, Walter Matthau, Sharon Osborne, and Charles M. Schultz have in common? They are all funny people who suffered from an un-funny disease – Colon Cancer. As a cause of death, it is the second highest of all cancers; 1 in 20 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer. But colorectal cancer is preventable, and it is survivable with early diagnosis and treatment. All that’s needed is a very un-funny procedure and some intestinal fortitude.
“Up to one third of your friends and loved ones don’t get their recommended colonoscopy because they’re scared or embarrassed,” says Patricia Raymond M.D., AKA “Ms. Butt Meddler.” “Then they get colon cancer. And now you can help us to rectify the problem.”
To help friends and family get comfortable with the procedure, and raise awareness during March’s Colon Cancer Awareness Month, Raymond has created a parody video titled, “Lookin’ Up My Backdoor.” The video pays homage to Credence Clearwater Revival’s hit song “Lookin’ Out My Backdoor,” but with a decidedly different message. The video can be viewed at www.ButtMeddler.com or on YouTube. The audio may be freely downloaded at iTunes.
Able to also speak seriously on the subject, Dr. Raymond can address the following tips for your readers:
- Most early colorectal cancers produce no symptoms. Both men and women are at risk; colorectal cancer is an “equal opportunity” cancer.
- Most colorectal cancers develop from polyps, which may transform into cancer over eight to twelve years. Colonoscopy detects pre-cancerous polyps, so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. At least 75-90 % of colorectal cancer can be avoided through removal of pre-cancerous polyps.
- The colon cancer death rate could be cut in half if Americans simply followed recommended screening guidelines, according to the American Cancer Society. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends colonoscopy every ten years beginning at age 50. Last year over 50,000 people died of colorectal cancer in the United States.
- African Americans have the highest incidence and mortality of any ethnic group, so should start their screening earlier, at age 45
Patricia L. Raymond, M.D., FACP, FACG takes medicine seriously and herself lightly, and dons the alter ego of the cheeky and probing divine Ms. Butt Meddler to raise awareness of colorectal cancer screening. She is President of Rx for Sanity (www.RxForSanity.com), host of Your Health Choice Radio (www.YourHealthChoice.net), and a practicing gastroenterologist. Dr. Raymond earned her degrees at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and The College of William and Mary, and is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians. The author of “Don’t Jettison Medicine: Resuscitate Your Passion For the Career You Loved”, “Colonoscopy: It’ll Crack U Up!” and “Colonoscopy Is A Gas!”, Dr. Raymond’s upcoming opus is “Colonoscopy: It’s Not A Party Until Somebody Loses Their Pants!”
